Do you have a map in your car’s glove box? Or have you ever gone on vacation and were sure to buy a map before you headed out? A map today typically serves just one purpose and that’s to tell us how to get to where we’re going. When you look at antique maps you may notice that this purpose cannot be served, as many of them don’t even show the world as we know it to be today! How can you find your way to California if you’re working off a map that doesn’t go any further west than the Mississippi River? Or how can you find your way to a certain nation in Eastern Europe if that nation doesn’t even exist anymore? Considering the fact that many antique maps are missing complete chunks of information when it comes to certain areas of the world, we may ask just what is it about them that makes them so valuable?

From a practical point of view it is true that antique maps might not serve much of a purpose today. Many people don’t even look at modern-day maps as they often rely on their car’s global positioning system or will simply get directions from the internet. But to a collector or a history buff, antique maps are priceless connections to our past. They may also celebrate certain heritages or cultures that may not even be around today. What do we mean by this?

Consider antique maps of the United States. To many collectors, when they look at maps that show the North American continent before the Puritans settled they appreciate how the Native American nations really lived and existed. It can drive home the point of what a populous group of peoples they were at that time. Antique maps can also tell a story about political upheavals and circumstances more so than history books. For example, those older maps of Eastern Europe that contain nations that are no longer in existence today really show how such a large part of the world’s landscape can change through politics and government action. After all, those nations didn’t disappear because they sank into the ocean! They’re gone, and new nations have formed in their place, because of the political actions of the governments around them. Reading about these things happening is one thing, but seeing how antique maps have had to be changed and updated can really illustrate the point like nothing else.

Antique maps are often used by collectors as works of art. They are usually framed and hung in an honored position in the home. They can be considered as part of any person’s heritage or can tell a story about how the world is constantly changing and evolving. They are usually loved by historians and those interested in world culture. So while you may not have any purpose in keeping one in your glove box today, antique maps are actually very valuable to those who do appreciate them.
